Lesson 3

Reading

2. Read this popular Aesop fable quickly and choose the best moral.

A. Dreams can come true if you work hard.
B. It’s better to live a simple life and feel safe than live in luxury and feel afraid.
C. It’s healthier to live in the country because the air is clean and the food is good for you.

Listening

4. Listen to another version of the fable and make a note of the similarities and differences in your notebook.

Similarities: main characters in both stories are mice (one a city mouse and one a country mouse). Both like the places where they live. They both pay each other a visit. In both stories, they eat dinner at a dining table, and in both stories a cat scares the mice. In both stories, they each decide they prefer life in their own places.

Differences: in the audio story, the mice have names (Molly and Marco). In the audio story they are friends (not cousins); in the audio, they eat bread and cheese in the country (not fresh peas and corn). In the audio in the city, they eat meat, tomatoes, pizza and ice cream NOT grapes, chocolate cake, cheese and special bread.
