Writing

5. Re-read the last three paragraphs of this part of the story. How has Pip changed since the start of the story? Write a paragraph giving your answer.

Pip now feels that he’s different to the people around him because they are poor, and he is going to become rich.

Also, because they aren’t educated, and he’s going to get an education and become a gentleman.

He now sees the other people in the village as ‘poor people’.

He knows that he is different to them now that he has ‘ine clothes’ and he feels uncomfortable about this difference because he doesn’t want them to see him in these clothes.

Pip says that he feels ‘ashamed’ of Joe’s poor education now, but he used to respect him as a blacksmith.

One effect of these changes on Pip is that he’s now avoiding contact with people who he used to be happy with, speciically Joe and the other people in the village. As a result, Pip feels very lonely.
